My name is Julissa, and I am currently attending Dominican University. I am majoring in Psychology with a minor in Criminology, and hope to become a Criminal Psychologist. During my time at Dominican, I have had the opportunity to give back by volunteering at Erie house during my Spring 2023 semester by being an English-Language tutor for adult learners. Growing up, I saw how my family struggled to learn the English language and I knew I would want to give support to those who were also seeking to better their proficiency in the language. The look of relief and assurance that overcomes primarily Spanish-speaking families is one of the aspects that I’ve found to be so rewarding in my time interning.
Hobbies outside of school and my internship include spending time with my family and friends, going to the gym to promote my health and wellness, and being outdoors.
To the Loving Lily Forever family,
I want to express my sincerest gratitude for being selected as the recipient of the Spring 2024 Maria L. Tejada Scholarship. It is a great honor to not only carry on the legacy of Lily, but also continue the impactful work she’s done with the youths of our city! As a first-generation Latina, receiving this award as a result of my internship at the Juvenile Probation Center has been really helpful in assisting me and paving the path for my success in both school and professionally while recognizing the importance of my experiences and accomplishments. My time as an intern has been nothing short of inspiring, and if given the opportunity, I would do it all over again! The bonds I have created with all the amazing officers I have worked with and skills I have acquired are something I will carry with me in my journey as an aspiring Criminal Psychologist. I have plans to pursue higher education and obtain a Master’s degree in hopes of continuing to provide support to underprivileged youths and their families the same way Lily has.
